Wenhui Hao (b. 2000) is a Chinese artist currently based in London. Working primarily with painting, she explores the intersections of body, trauma, and materiality, merging personal emotion with social and political reflection.
Hao’s recent work focuses on reconstructing female narratives.  In her imagery, dissected food, hollowed forms, and wounded flesh become metaphors for both harm and healing. Wenhui Hao is obsessed with the accumulation of layered paint, the visceral eye touch such a build up reveals. This tactile aspect, she says, brings personal pleasure. And so setting this physical state against a backdrop of an R.C.A. graduate degree and her own cultural heritage growing up in Taiyuan, China, creates a stark contrast of reference points. Filtration can be attitude, what gets caught in the sifter of our imagination and what slips through, made anew.
For Wenhui Hao, painting is a ritual of destruction and restoration, where materiality and erotic experience converge. Her work reveals the body as a site of both trauma and resistance, turning pain into a language of resilience and self-reclamation.
